FAQ Forklift Operator Training

What are some examples of equipment requiring formal training?

  • fork trucks
  • motorized hand trucks (pallet jacks)
  • top loaders
  • container top handlers
  • straddle carriers
  • side handlers
  • order pickers
  • container reach stackers

Who should be trained?

Every person who operates a powered industrial truck.  Each operator must have documentation of training and evaluation.

What if the operator already has experience?

Even “experienced operators” are required to successfully pass the training and evaluation by a qualified trainer.

What time does the class start/where?

The course is one day, from 7am-4pm (end time may vary); Maximum class size is 9. Course takes place monthly at Northwest Handling Systems, Inc. Renton, WA

What is the cost of the Operator Training?

For experienced students, the course is $100.00 plus $35.00 for each type of forklift they need certification on. For brand new operators, the cost is $100.00 plus $100.00 for each type of forklift they need certification on.

When is retraining required?

Forklift operator retraining is required every 3 years.  Retraining is required sooner if the operator

  • fails the evaluation,
  • uses unsafe behavior, or
  • has an accident or near miss.

The forklift code requires that all forklift operators be evaluated by the employer by operating the forklifts in the actual work environment.
