FAQ: Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operator (P/EVO)

Is training and certification required?

Washington State Department of Transportation requirements per WAC 468-38-110. While performing as a P/EVO operator you must have a state certification card on your person.

Who is required to have the training?

Anyone serving as a pilot/escort vehicle driver transporting or moving oversized equipment or loads within Washington State’s borders.

Who enforces certification requirements?

The Washington State Patrol on the highways and at the weigh stations.

Are other States cards excepted in Washington?

Currently the only excepted cards are from North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah and Florida.

What are the requirements for attending the class or performing as a P/EVO?

  • You must be 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license from any of the 50 states in the U.S.
  • Should be able to read and speak English.
  • Must be able to perform flagging duties and perform traffic control.
  • Must be drug and alcohol free when performing P/E vehicle duties.
  • Must carry minimum liability insurance as required by Washington State.
  • If corrective lenses are necessary, the operators must wear them while performing P/E duties.

What is the cost of the class?

The cost of the P/EVO Class varies depending on who you take it from.

I lost my card, how do I get a new one?

The cost of a replacement card is $10.00. We do not replace cards until payment is received. Before a new card can be replaced, the student will need to be verified in our computer system. We collect the First and Last names, mailing address, phone number, ID number used on the card and approximate date of training. If the individual remembers the instructor and/or location of the training that is also helpful.

Who helped in the development of the P/EVO Program?

A task force was convened to establish guidelines for the P/EVO Training. The task force included members from the Department of Transportation, the Division of Motor Carriers, private companies with experience in Pilot/Escorting, and the Washington State Patrol. The task force also recommended the Traffic Control Oversight Committee assume responsibility for policies and procedures to standardize and assure the continuing quality of P/EVO training.
