The Evergreen Safety Council Story

1932 - Present

The Seattle Safety Council was established (chartered by the National Safety Council) in 1932 to develop traffic safety programs for roads that were increasingly congested with automobiles and trucks. In 1954 we became the Seattle King County Safety Council, and in 1970 our name was changed to the Evergreen Safety Council, better reflecting the fact that we serve the entire Pacific Northwest.

Today, the Evergreen Safety Council is a private non-profit (501 C-3) independently-operated, regional safety council providing training programs targeting the needs and concerns of businesses and organizations in the Greater Northwest. We are a Charter Member of the American Association of Safety Councils, and remain a member of the National Safety Council.

The board of directors is comprised of up to a maximum of 20 individuals from the Greater Northwest 'community'. The board meets on a monthly basis to review ESC's financial and operational progress.

The Council's Seattle facility features office space, three training classrooms and the Hardhat Cafe, used as a break area and dining facility for students attending courses at the Center.

Since the 1980's, the Council has used Training Advisory Committees to evaluate programs and guarantee the best quality safety training programs possible. These Training Advisory Committees are made up of industry professionals who are in touch with safety training needs and requirements.

Quality, up-to-date program development coupled with dynamic, informative instructors is the successful formula upon which ESC has built its customer and membership base. The Council hopes to build on this reputation even further by increasing its membership with a comprehensive package that meets our customers' needs, along with the exceptional safety training programs that are delivered month after month. Definitive customer service is a goal that we strive to achieve in order to be the most recognized resource for health and safety training throughout the Northwest.

The past and present Executive Directors, devoted staff and dedicated Board of Directors have established Evergreen Safety Council as a successful, independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization with an excellent reputation in the safety community. We look forward to another 75 years of being the Northwest's safety solution.

Evergreen serves the businesses, governmental entities, and communities of the States of Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska through the dissemination of safety and health information and the provision of safety and health training. We work very closely with Region X of the Federal Department of Labor/OSHA, whose service area is identical to that of the Safety Council. We also have a strong relationship with the Washington State staff (WISHA) as well as a growing relationship with the OR-OSHA and AK-OSHA staffs.

Funding for Evergreen comes from membership and fees for service. Membership is open and encouraged for all businesses seeking to improve safety and health for workers, their families, and the community.
